A note on accessibility: styled unicode is read poorly by screen readers, often letter by letter or not at all. Use it for a word or two of emphasis, not whole posts.

How bold text works on Bluesky

Bluesky posts are plain text. Styled Unicode letters display as bold or italic and count as one character each, but they do not match Bluesky search or custom feeds that filter by keyword.

Frequently asked questions

Does Bluesky support bold text?

Not natively. Styled Unicode letters display as bold, but keyword feeds and search will not match the styled words.

Will styled text hurt accessibility?

It can. Screen readers often read styled letters one by one or skip them. Use them for a word or two of emphasis and keep the rest of the post plain.

How do I undo the formatting?

Select the styled text and choose Undo formatting. The tool turns styled letters back into plain ones.
