Target audience

The group of people a piece of content, publication, or offer is intended to help.

A target audience is defined by a relevant need or situation, not only demographics. Useful details include what people are trying to accomplish, what they already know, and what prevents progress. These details guide examples, vocabulary, and the depth of explanation.

A newsletter for new freelance designers can explain writing a first proposal without assuming the reader already runs an agency. A publication for agency owners may cover the same subject through staffing, margins, and review processes.

The intended audience and the observed audience can differ. Use replies, interviews, signup preferences, and content performance to learn who finds the work useful. Avoid treating a fictional audience profile as stronger evidence than what readers actually tell you.
