Opt-in
The act of choosing to receive a particular type of communication, such as subscribing to an email newsletter.
Opt-in is an affirmative choice to receive communication. A clear signup form explains what the publication covers and how often it is sent. The choice should be understandable without requiring a reader to infer that downloading a resource also subscribes them to unrelated messages.
A form might say: Receive one practical writing lesson each Friday. The subscriber enters an address and submits the form. With single opt-in, that submission activates the subscription; with double opt-in, a confirmation step follows.
Access to an email address does not establish opt-in. Buying a list or collecting an address during an unrelated interaction does not tell you that the recipient wants your newsletter. Keep the subscription promise visible and make it easy to leave.
