How the cadence is calculated
The newsletter is budgeted first, posts adapted from it second, and original posts take whatever time is left. The planner assumes two hours per edition, three posts adapted from each edition at eight minutes, and twenty-five minutes per original post.
- Newsletter time per week
- Editions per month × 120 minutes / 4.33
- Adapted posts per week
- Editions per month × 3 / 4.33
- Original posts per week
- (Weekly minutes - newsletter - adapted) / 25 minutes
- Posts per platform
- Total posts per week / platforms
A cadence you keep beats a cadence you admire
Most posting plans fail on the second busy week, because they were sized to a free one. This planner sizes the plan to the hours that survive client work and the edition that has to go out regardless. Posts adapted from an edition cost a few minutes each because the thinking is done; original posts carry the full cost, so the remainder of the budget decides how many of those fit. The per-post assumptions are fixed so the planner stays quick; if your editions take an hour or your originals take an afternoon, read the result as a direction rather than a number. It is a time budget, not a growth forecast, and it does not say which platform deserves the posts.
Frequently asked questions
How often should one person post on social media?
As often as the hours allow after the work that already has a deadline. Five hours a week with a weekly newsletter usually supports a handful of adapted posts and two or three originals, spread across the platforms you keep active. The planner shows the number for your own inputs rather than a published rule.
Why is the newsletter budgeted before social posts?
Because it is the commitment readers notice when it slips. Budgeting it first keeps a plan honest: if the edition alone uses the whole week, the planner says so instead of stacking posts on top of time that does not exist.
What counts as a post adapted from an edition?
A post whose idea and most of its words come from an edition you already wrote: a section turned into a thread, a quote, a lesson restated for LinkedIn. Distinctful drafts these from each edition on every plan, but the planner works with any process where the thinking has been done once.
Does this tell me which platform to post on?
No. It divides the sustainable total evenly across the platforms you count. Which platform deserves more of it depends on where your readers come from, which your newsletter provider reports and this planner does not see.
