What is Revenue per subscriber?

Revenue attributable to the newsletter divided by active subscribers. It turns an audience count into a business number.

Revenue per subscriber divides the revenue your newsletter influences by the number of active subscribers. It converts an audience count, which flatters, into a business number, which informs: a list of 3,000 producing $1.50 per subscriber is a stronger business than a list of 30,000 producing $0.04.

It is the metric that keeps growth honest. Subscriber count can rise while the business stands still; revenue per subscriber falls when growth outpaces the list’s willingness to buy, and rises when the offer and the audience actually fit. Watching it month over month tells you which one is happening.
