Preview text

The short email snippet shown beside or below the subject line in many inboxes, also called preheader text.

Preview text gives a reader additional context before opening an email. When a sender does not set it, the email app may pull text from the message body, sometimes exposing navigation labels or a view-in-browser link instead of a useful summary.

A subject line such as Your September planting guide could use preview text such as Three vegetables to sow before the first frost. The two lines work together: one names the edition, while the other explains the specific value inside.

The amount shown varies by email app, device, and inbox layout. Put essential meaning early, avoid simply repeating the subject line, and preview a test email in the clients your audience commonly uses.
