Best Newsletter Platforms for Selling Products: Kit, beehiiv, Substack

Choose a newsletter platform around what you sell and how you sell it. A paid newsletter needs subscription delivery and billing. A course or service may need forms, segmentation, follow-up emails, and a separate checkout. A low headline price does not tell you whether that workflow is covered.

What we checked

On October 7, 2026, we checked the official Kit and beehiiv pricing pages at 1,000 subscribers, switched between monthly and annual billing, and read Substack's fee documentation. We also checked Kit and beehiiv acquisition documentation. We did not run comparative delivery tests or measure customer sales results.

All prices below are in US dollars. “Per month billed monthly” and “annual total divided by twelve” are different numbers. The distinction matters when a pricing page rounds its annual equivalent.

The beehiiv yearly amounts above are calculated from its displayed annual-plan monthly equivalents, not confirmed checkout totals.

Free publishing is available too. Kit lists a free plan for up to 10,000 subscribers; beehiiv Free covers up to 2,500. Substack charges its platform fee when you turn on paid subscriptions. Compare each free plan's feature limits before assuming you need a paid tier.

Kit: check the automation you need

Kit's pricing page lists forms, segmentation, and digital product sales, with additional automation capabilities on Creator. Our recommendation is to test a small version of your sales sequence: sign up through a form, apply the intended segmentation, and confirm the follow-up behaves as expected.

For Kit Creator, the annual calculation is:

12 monthly payments = 12 × $39 = $468
Annual payment = $390
Annual savings = $468 - $390 = $78
Annual monthly equivalent = $390 / 12 = $32.50

Kit displays the last figure rounded to $33/month. That is not its monthly-billed price. Check the subscriber slider again as your list grows.

beehiiv: match the paid tier to the feature

beehiiv now lists Free, Lite, Pro, and Enterprise. Digital products are included across plans. Lite adds automations and paid subscriptions with a 0% platform take rate; Pro adds capabilities including branding removal. Check the feature limits for the product you intend to sell.

At the checked tier, twelve monthly Lite payments total $708. Its displayed $49 annual-plan monthly equivalent gives $588 over twelve months, a calculated $120 difference before tax. Confirm the actual annual checkout total and the price for your list size before committing.

Substack: calculate the percentage against subscription revenue

Substack's official documentation specifies a 10% platform fee on paid subscriptions, plus payment-processing charges. Free publishing has no Substack platform fee. A sale through an unrelated course or service checkout is a different transaction; do not apply the subscription percentage to all business revenue.

For a simple platform-fee comparison with monthly beehiiv Lite at 1,000 subscribers:

Break-even monthly subscription revenue = $59 / 0.10 = $590

Illustrative calculation, not an observed newsletter result: 50 paying subscribers at $10/month produce $500 of monthly subscription revenue. The Substack platform fee is $50, compared with $59 for Lite. At 100 paying subscribers, the fee is $100, making the platform-fee difference $41/month or $492 over twelve months at those fixed prices.

Processing charges do not automatically cancel out. Keep them separate, along with refunds and taxes, when estimating what you retain. A platform's discovery or workflow advantages may also be worth more to you than the fee difference.

Acquisition reporting exists, with conditions

Newsletter platforms can record how a subscriber arrived. Kit documents attribution for supported signup paths and notes gaps for imports and API-created subscribers. beehiiv documents source, medium, and campaign information, along with paths that can lose the original labels.

A preserved UTM value can identify a tagged campaign or link. It cannot establish every earlier exposure, recover missing data, or prove why someone made a purchase. Test a signup through your actual form before relying on a report. The UTM walkthrough explains that check.

Choose with one small trial

For your own products, test Kit's form and automation flow and beehiiv's digital-product flow against the actual offer you want to sell. For paid editions, compare subscription features and fees at your expected list size and paid revenue. Use the free plans where their features cover the experiment.

Before the trial ends, complete a test purchase, check delivery, and confirm how a buyer stops receiving an offer they already bought. Keep the result alongside the plan, subscriber tier, billing period, and date. Repeat the check when the list or business model changes. If switching becomes necessary, review what transfers between newsletter platforms.
