It is the number people quote in bios and the one platforms display most prominently, which is exactly why it distorts decisions. A follower is permission for the platform to show your work, not a guarantee that it will.
The gap between followers and reach is the useful part. If 40,000 followers produce 2,000 views, the follower number is describing history rather than attention. Watching reach and list growth beside follower count tells you whether an audience is compounding or just accumulating.
